Vice President of Blind Sports WA (link opens in new window) Brad Brider hopes to establish a blind AFL team to play in competitive games.

“AFL is part of our identity. Nothing else in Australia has such wide appeal. It’s a sport built on tradition and history. We’re the first state outside of Victoria to embrace Blind AFL, so come along and support it.”

Blind AFL is popular in Victoria

Blind AFL football is very similar to traditional Australian Rules Football, with slight adaptions to rules and modifications to equipment. It’s a sport that goes back more than a hundred years and is one of the country’s most loved.

The football has an electronic beeper inserted inside it to produce a sound loud enough to help players to locate it. The ball used is a soft touch Sherrin hi visible yellow ball.

Goals have flashing lights behind each goal post and there is high contrast meshing behind the goalposts to make them highly visible to people with limited sight. Goal umpires shake their rattlers when the football enters the scoring zone.

Field umpires wear hi-vis vests to distinguish themselves to the players.
