Sighted guide training

Participants will learn how to safely guide a person with vision impairment including various techniques depending on changes in surface levels and locating furniture. Participants will also have the opportunity to experiences a ‘blindfold’ sighted guide experience.

Overview of VisAbility’s services

Living with vision impairment

Participants will gain an insight into what it is like to live with vision impairment. Participants will learn about adaptive strategies used by people living with vision impairment and learn helpful everyday tips that can be used when supporting someone with vision impairment.

Vision impairment in the workplace

Are you the employer or colleague of someone living with vision impairment? This workshop provides participants with an overview of vision impairment, how you can be a supportive employer or colleague and the most common technologies that are used by people with vision impairment.

Childhood vision impairment

One size does not fit all! Participants will gain an understanding on the range of childhood eye conditions including cerebral vision impairment and strategies to encourage children to reach their full potential.

Acquired Brain Injury (ABI)

Did you know that some people with an ABI experience neurological vision impairment? Learn strategies to support a person with neurological vision impairment as well as VisAbility’s dedicated ABI service.

Supporting people with vision impairment in supported living environments

Do you support people living in an environment such as an aged care facility? Learn some simple and effective ways to increase independence and accessibility for people with vision impairment.

iDevice accessibility

Ever imagined how you would use a flat screen? Participants will learn the basics of inbuilt accessibility features for devices such as iPhones and iPads.

Technology in everyday life

Ever wondered how people with vision impairment read, use a computer or send a text message? Participants will gain an insight into the range of life-changing technologies available to support people with vision impairment to be independent at home, work or in the community.

Creating Accessible Word Documents

In this three hour workshop, learn how people with disability engage with content, including a demonstration of how assistive technology interprets content produced by your organisation. This workshop focuses on the W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0 and 2.1, the assessment process, accessibility ‘quick wins’, free tools that can assist in determining existing accessibility issues and processes for fixing them. It also highlights the built-in accessibility features available when creating a Word or PDF document, and handy tips for producing information for the public, customers or clients.
