VisAbility’s interactive workshops provide the opportunity for participants to gain knowledge and insight into disability or vision impairment.

Training Workshops

Living with Vision Impairment (1.5 hours OR 2 hours with human-guide experience)

  • Strategies: learn everyday tips and strategies that can be used by someone with vision impairment.
  • Assistive Technology: gain an insight into the range of life-changing technologies available to support people with vision impairment to be independent at home, work or in the community. Assistive Technology discussed will include low- and high-tech options.
  • Day in a life: gain insight into what it’s like to live with vision impairment. This discussion will be centred around a typical day for a person with vision impairment including the strategies and assistive technologies used during their day.
  • Human guide training: participants will learn how to safely guide a person with vision impairment.
    • If 2 hour option is chosen, participants will also have the opportunity to experience a “blind fold” sighted guide experience.
  • VisAbility Services: information on the range of VisAbility services available to people with disability or vision impairment. Participants will also learn how to refer to VisAbility.

Day in the Life of a Person with a Vision Impairment (1 hour)

  • Day in a life: Ever wondered what it would be like to live with a vision impairment? Gain insight into what a typical day may entail with vision impairment. This discussion will including the strategies and assistive technologies used during the day.
  • VisAbility Services: information on the range of VisAbility services available to people with disability or vision impairment. Participants will also learn how to refer to VisAbility.

Vision Impairment in the Workplace (1 hour)

  • Workplace: are you an employer or colleague of someone living with vision impairment? This workshop provides an overview of vision impairment, how you can be a supportive employer or colleague and the most common technologies that are used by people with vision impairment.
  • Human guide training: learn how to safely guide a person with vision impairment including various techniques depending on changes in service levels and locating furniture. Participants will also have the opportunity to experiences a “blind fold” sighted guide experience.
  • VisAbility Services: information on the range of VisAbility services available to people with disability or vision impairment. Participants will also learn how to refer to VisAbility.

Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) (1 hour)

  • ABI: Did you know that some people with an ABI experience neurological vision impairment? Learn strategies to support a person with neurological vision impairment as well as VisAbility’s dedicated ABI service.
  • Assistive Technology: Participants will gain an insight into the range of life-changing technology available to support people with vision impairment to be independent at home, work or in the community. Assistive Technology discussed will include low and high tech options.
  • VisAbility Services: Information on the range of VisAbility services available to people with disability or vision impairment. Participants will also learn how to refer to VisAbility.

Supporting people with Vision Impairment in Supported Living Environments (1 hour)

  • Do you support people living in an environment such as an aged care facility? Learn some simple and effect ways to increase independence and accessibility for people with vision impairment.
  • Human guide training: learn how to safely guide a person with vision impairment. Participants will also have the opportunity to experiences a “blind fold” sighted guide experience.
  • Strategies: learn everyday tips and strategies that can be used when supporting someone with vision impairment and learn how to make activities accessible.
  • VisAbility Services: information on the range of VisAbility services available to people with disability or vision impairment. Participants will also learn how to refer to VisAbility.

Creating Accessible Documents

  • Interested in how you can use Microsoft Word so that it is accessible to people with a print disability? VisAbility’s Information and Education professionals can provide you with an interactive and informative introduction.
  • VisAbility Services: information on the range of VisAbility services available to people with disability or vision impairment. Participants will also learn how to refer to VisAbility.

Fees

1 hour presentation (12 people or less): $179.50 plus GST
1 hour presentation (13 people or more): $359.00 plus GST
