Late last year, one of VisAbility’s team members was called to travel a bit further afield in the name of work. Emmanuel Lee, Assistive Technology Officer and Blindness Product Specialist travelled well over 2600km to conduct setup and training of assistive technology for an individual living in Darwin!
During the three day visit from 13-16th December, Emmanuel assisted client Cassandra for the Job Access Assessment program. He visited her workplace, installing accessible software to meet her requirements at work and spent quality time face-to-face providing some initial training so she felt comfortable using the new software that included a Jaws screen reader, and the Microsoft office suite.
For Emmanuel, his visit to Darwin was very rewarding. He was given the opportunity to carry out meaningful work, and ensure his clients could maintain their independence confidently in the workplace.
“It was interesting and rewarding (visiting Darwin), I am honored to be able to represent VisAbility. The people in Darwin speak highly of us and the professionalism we have as a training organisation. It was my first time in Darwin and overall it was a very wonderful and amazing trip!”
Emmanuel will be back in Darwin come March 2018, to finalise his Job Access training with Cassandra, and has another potential Job Access request in Tasmania come April. While not out on home visits and conducting Job Access Assessment, Emmanuel is kept busy providing training on how to utilize assistive software, blindness products and teaching braille. On top of this, Emmanuel also generously shares his love of music with the VisAbility community. “I am also a music teacher and assist with music performance group here at VisAbility. We show at open days, special Christmas functions and busking.”
