Course outline:
A monthly fun and relaxed group-based session for existing white cane users to learn new techniques and build confidence to travel to different or unfamiliar places.
Enjoy structured sessions in small groups, supported by a qualified Orientation and Mobility (O&M) Specialist.
This is an opportunity to meet other cane users, build friendships and share experiences. Motivate and work together to achieve individual mobility goals.
Sessions will visit different types of environment (eg. CBD, beach etc) to teach the specific skills needed for these spaces. Choose one or multiple sessions to attend as required.
Topics:
The course will cover:
- How to orientate yourself and understand where you are
- Build confidence and problem solving skills in unfamiliar environments
- Develop specific cane techniques for different types of spaces
- Discover devices and smartphone apps to help with travelling
- How to use public transport safely
Sessions include:
Wednesday 11 October 2023 – Perth CBD. Build on public transport and orientation skills in an informative, fun and engaging manner.
Wednesday 8 November 2023 – Beach Day and surrounds. We will travel to one of many popular Perth beaches by public transport, explore orientation skills and cane skills for a beach environment.
Who is this course for?
This group is aimed at adults with low or no vision who have some experience of using a white cane, with a good basic level of skill.
Please note: If you have not used a white cane and would like to learn, please contact our Orientation and Mobility team below, who will conduct an assessment and provide full training.
Cane Confidence group details
Dates: Every second Wednesday, from 11 October 2023 – 13 March 2024
Time: 10.00am – 2.00pm
Duration: Monthly. Attend for one or multiple groups, the choice is yours.
Where: VisAbility, 61 Kitchener Avenue, Victoria Park
These sessions will be charged under NDIS, MAC (HCP/CHSP), DVA or fee for service funding.
