Norman shares his Speech Pathology Success

in Latest News, Stories of Independence

Communication is a two-way process. When one communication partner has difficulty accessing this communication process (e.g., by not maintaining the flow of a conversation, not being able to see the person they’re talking to, or not understanding humour), misinterpretations and frustration for both communication partners may occur. People of all ages and all abilities have a right to access successful communication, to have access to help, and to be able to “get the message”. As it is Speech Pathology Week 2017 from August 20-26, we interviewed Norman who has been accessing speech pathology services with Leone, Since May.

Norman, left, sits next to VisAbility’s Youth Support Officer Ryan Honschooten.

“I am more confident now, I am speaking slower and more clearly” says Norman.

Through National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) funding, Norman has been accessing VisAbility’s speech pathology services.

Norman enjoys his sessions with Leone and described her as being “patient”.

Norman is a keen West Coast Eagle supporter, who enjoys bowling, the gym and loves discos. Norman is always on the move. As Norman is very social, he has lots of opportunities to practice the skills that he is learning in his speech therapy sessions.

Norman was also proud to let us know that his family have also noticed a difference with his communication.
