Welcome back to our Stories of Independence; written about you, by you. Guest writers are invited to share their own personal experiences, or express their views on the world around them. Below, young Ruby shares her experience of meeting Assistance Dog in Training Hilda! This is her story.
“Hi! My name is Ruby and I am 13 years old. I’m an animal lover. On Wednesday June the 21st in the afternoon, I came into The VisAbility Perron Centre to do an exciting activity. When I got to VisAbility with my Mum and Dad, we went into a play room. My Speech Pathologist Caris and Occupational Therapist Jacinta were waiting for me. We were all waiting for a very special guest to arrive, Hilda, an Assistance Dog in Training!
Hilda and one of the staff from Guide Dogs Heather joined in with us all for our activities. We practiced describing the different features that Hilda had. When describing what she looked like, I said that she was a yellow Labrador with very soft ears! Another activity I did with Hilda was thinking about similarities and differences between Hilda and my dog Tippy.
I also practiced writing out and giving commands to Hilda. I think she was very obedient. Some of Hilda’s tricks I told her to do were to sit, lay, stay, come, roll over, drop, and up sit. My dog Tippy isn’t as obedient as Hilda, but I wish that she was!
I felt so excited and happy to meet Hilda and do some activities with her. I love animals! As well as my dog Tippy, I also have a pet ferret called Monte. When I’m older, I would love to work with animals and maybe be a dog groomer or zoo keeper.
I’m looking forward to the next time I meet one of the dogs at VisAbility to do my activities with!”
