In Plain Sight: Manny and Art’s Journey Through Music, Community, and Vision

Music, community, and lived experience took centre stage in a recent episode of In Plain Sight on Vision Australia Radio, where Emmanuel (Manny) Lee and Atichat (Art) Kanishka shared how their journeys through vision loss led them to rediscover joy and connection through the VisAbility music program. Their conversation was a powerful reminder that even in the face of life-changing challenges, creativity and camaraderie can light the way forward.

Meet Emmanuel and Art

Assistive Technology Specialist, Manny, is not only a tech expert but also a passionate musician and mentor. Art, a long-time client and talented guitarist, found his way back to music after losing his vision due to Leber’s hereditary optic neuropathy. Together, they are part of The Grand Delusions, a band born from VisAbility’s music program in Victoria Park.

What started in 2015 as a small group of two guitarists, a bongo player, and Manny on keyboard, has grown into a vibrant ensemble of ten. The band brings together people with vision impairment, each with their own story and sound. They rehearse weekly, perform across Perth, and most importantly, support one another.

Art joined the band five years ago, after losing his vision due to a genetic condition. At first, he simply listened in. But with encouragement from Manny and others, he picked up his guitar again, a skill he had set aside after his diagnosis.

“I just needed practice to bring back my memories, and Manny’s been helping me a lot.”

– Atichat Kanishka

Through the band, Art found not only a renewed love for music but also a community that understands the ups and downs of vision impairment. “Each week we learn new songs and share our experiences. It’s very relaxing and uplifting.”

Music as Peer Support

The music program isn’t just about melodies and chords, but more importantly it’s about camaraderie. Manny shared how the band was created to help people rediscover joy and purpose after vision loss.

“We tell people there is still hope, even though you can’t see, there is something else you can share with others.”

– Emmanuel Lee

Art echoed that sentiment, describing how music helped him reconnect with his passion and meet others with similar experiences. “Each week, we learn new songs and share our stories,” he said. “It’s very relaxing and uplifting.”

Beyond the Band

Both Manny and Art are active in other community programs. Manny enjoys tandem bike riding with a local club, while Art plays blind golf every Friday in Claremont. These activities, supported by VisAbility and the NDIS, offer more than recreation – they’re spaces for connection, learning, and healing.
