For the Perth artists featured in the exhibition Beyond Vision, the event is about much more than displaying their work.
Each painting, mosaic, pottery item or handcrafted piece of timber has been created by an artist living with low or no vision and represents a personal triumph over barriers and celebration of community.
Showing at Kent Street Gallery in the Victoria Park Centre for the Arts, Beyond Vision is the first public exhibition presented by VisAbility and includes work by artists involved in programs at the organisation’s Community Activity Centre (CAC).
For decades, VisAbility’s CAC in Victoria Park has operated as a hub for people with low or no vision to build social connections, develop life skills and explore their interests — offering programs in art, music, languages, cooking, woodwork, yoga and social activities.
CAC Coordinator Marcelo Prates said the seminal exhibition has been decades in the making and encourages visitors to look beyond assumptions about disability.

“While visitors will see an impressive collection of artwork on display, what they will really be seeing are stories… of people discovering possibilities they never imagined for themselves,” he said.
“Their artworks reflect unique life experiences, personal journeys and perspectives shaped by resilience, determination and creativity.”
“It is about showcasing what can happen when people are given opportunities to connect, learn, create and belong.”
Many of the artists exhibiting in Beyond Vision have attended the CAC for years, and in some cases decades. Several will be exhibiting their work publicly for the first time.
Beyond Vision offers an opportunity to experience high-quality creative work and celebrate a significant milestone for the CAC and its community.
Members of the public are invited to attend the opening night on 17 July or visit the exhibition, running until 4 August.
