Leading the way for businesses across Tasmania, Hotel SOHO with the help of VisAbility launched their low-vision and braille menus during Jul-EYE (eye health month). Through VisAbility’s print disability service program, Hotel SOHO created both braille and large print versions of their menu. The alternative format to their current print menu, means those with low vision are now able to access the menu independently. Those customers who are braille users, or have a vision impairment can read it without assistance from friends or staff members.
Hotel co-owners Robert Devine and Noddy, hope the release of their menu will be the beginning of more establishments following suit. Everyone should not only feel included, but actually be included.
We strive to ensure that everyone feels welcome, and we would like people who are vision impaired or with low vision to not only feel welcome but also comfortable in our establishment. It’s very important to us at the venue that everyone is treated equally, we want to offer the full dining experience to all our guests. We hope to achieve acceptance in the community as an equal opportunity venue and hope we receive support from the community.Noddy (Chris Mellefont), Hotel SOHO co-owner.
Zane Budd who also works within the disability sector at Mosaic contacted VisAbility for their assistance to ensure that the menu was accessible for all low vision and blind patrons at Hotel SOHO.
We wanted to create something that will benefit a community in the southern end of Tasmania. I hope that it will have a whole of state ripple effect enabling wider communities to visit the south and have the opportunity to feel included, and have a menu with options they are able to read and/or interpret themselves.Zane Budd Marketing & Events Managers for Hotel SOHO.
