Having previously worked in hospitality positions, Chris decided to transition into office-based roles. Recognising the need for upskilling, Chris embarked on a transformative journey by enrolling in a one-year Business Administration course at North Metro TAFE. This decision marked the beginning of a new chapter in Chris’s career. It also highlighted the need for some additional support, as Chris is legally blind.
Supporting Chris’s Journey
In January 2023, Chris took a proactive step towards realising his professional goals by registering with VisAbility’s Disability Employment Services (DES). With the support of Qonrad, our dedicated Recruitment Partner, Chris navigated the application process with confidence. Interview tips and guidance provided by Qonrad ensured Chris was well-prepared for the opportunities that lay ahead.
Securing a Meaningful Role
In September of the same year, Chris’s perseverance paid off when he secured a position as an Admission Support Officer with the Department of Training and Workforce Development. This milestone achievement not only validated Chris’s capabilities but also provided an opportunity to contribute meaningfully to his workplace and community. Greg, our Workforce Partner, then stepped in to support Chris through his transition into the office environment.
Empowering Accessibility
VisAbility Accessibility Expert, David Vosnacos, conducted an assessment of Chris’s workspace at TAFE. Through the implementation of modifications and adaptive technology funded by Job Access, Chris’s workspace was tailored to accommodate his vision impairment, enabling them to work efficiently and confidently. The team went above and beyond, sourcing specialised equipment to place his monitors at the appropriate distance for his vision.
Professional Growth and Recognition
With newfound confidence and accessible technology at his disposal, Chris flourished in his role, exceeding expectations and earning praise for his exemplary work ethic and interpersonal skills. As a testament to his dedication and performance, Chris’s contract was extended, affirming his place as a valued member of the team.
